Back in the 40's and 50's Stamps Baxter Publishing Co. was really big into
the singin' schools! That where all of our songbooks came from. I still
have some of mine and boy were they used! All of the Melton's sang. Uncle
Paul Melton had a beautiful deep, bass voice. Juanita sang alto and still
does in the church choir. Mama (Lela) Melton sang alto and my Mom and
Geraldine sang soprano. Papa (Chester) sang on the hymns but only with a big
group. He was usually sitting smoking his corncob pipe! Those were some
good times and all the teachers in the schools gave a lot of us the right
start in Southern Gospel. The people at my church LOVE it when I swing into
some good 'ol Southern Gospel on Sunday night! Hands start clapping and
toes start tappin'!
