Subject: [ARIZARD-L] Ed Smith - Suzi
Suzi, et al:
I'm not sure what the original question was about Ed Smith, but I found an
Ed Smith in my records. However, he would be a grandson - not a great
grandson of Rutch Smith:
1 Wiley A. Smith (b. 1864) (son of Solomon Rutledge Smith)
+ Tennie ___ (b. 1871) (1910 census)
2 Ed Smith
+ ?
3 Clyde Smith (b. abt 1915, d. abt 1946)
3 Zada Smith
+ ___ Hunt
Following is an article from an unidentified newspaper about 1946:
JUMBO MAN DIES OF BURNS AFTER HEROIC RESCUE
Clyde Smith Loses Life After Saving Grandmother From Blazing Dwelling
Clyde Smith, 31, of Jumbo, five miles southwest of here, died in a
Batesville hospital early Monday from burns suffered while carrying his
invalid grandmother, Mrs. Tennie Smith, 75, from their home which burned
Sunday night.
The grandmother and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Smith, parents of Clyde, were also
taken to the hospital. The father is the only other member of the family
reported seriously injured.
According to report of neighbors, a portion of the roof collapsed on
young Smith as he was carrying his grandmother from the blazing dwelling.
It was said the roof was a mass of flames when the fire was discovered, and
all furniture, clothing and other belongings of the family were a total
loss.
Although his hair was completely burned from his head, the flesh was
literally falling from his arms and shoulders, his chest was charred and his
feet almost burned off, Smith lived about nine hours after the tragedy and
was conscious until his death. He had been given medical discharge from the
U.S. Army about three months ago.
Burial was at the Combs cemetery Tuesday afternoon, Eld. C.L. Wilkerson,
minister of the church of Christ, conducted the services and arrangements
were in charge of Higginbotham Funeral Service. Besides his parents, he is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Zada Hunt, also of Jumbo.
