My Favorite Skirt

My grandmother, Lela Forrest Melton, made me a skirt when I went to seventh
grade at Violet Hill. Mama collected her precious hoard of feedsacks and
used them for quilting and clothing. She made me a "gored" skirt with
alternating panels of colorful colors and plain white muslin! It was so
pretty and I felt very special when I wore it because I knew how she
treasured her collection of feed sacks!

Nothing went to waste. When clothing wore out (and believe me, it had to
look pretty awful to be considered "worn out" ) you took the buttons OFF and
put them in the button box and then you cut quilt pieces out of the
parts that could still be used. She also used feedsacks for her quilting
squares. I can remember my Mom and I
under a quilt at night, pointing to each piece and remembering where it came
from!

All of the winter clothing was stored in a closet and to this day I can
still "smell" that old musty woolen smell! Can't you just smell it now!
