McWhorter, son of Henry McWhorter, a native of Ireland) brought over as a
boy, m. 17 Jan 1819 in the 24th yr. of his age in Abbeville Dist., S.C. to
Eliz. Ann Baker b. 14 Feb 1798. Children:

[From Mr. Davis L. McWhorter, Bethel, N.C. 1960. He adds, "The will of Moses
McWhorter (father of Alan M.) is dated and probated in 1797 in Edgefield,
S.C. & names 3 sons by his 1st wife (name unknown): Moses; Lowden of Cowden;
John and 5 children by his 2nd wife, Eliz. Puckett: Geo. Allen; Sarah
Douglass; Danl. Puckett; Allen Marlin; Jane Allen. Bible records of son John
have been given. Those of his half brother, Allen Marlin, were sent me in
1932 by a grandson, Valentine Burnett of Bowden, Ga. then aged 78 yrs. The
death of Allen McWhorter is not known. He was away from home & supposedly
lost his life trying to escape Yankee soldiers in 1864. His wife died in
1863. The oldest dau. of Harvey McWhorter, Drusilla b. 1841, lived past 90
yrs. & gave much family data to the writer. When her mother d. she and her
sister were reared by their grandparents. When her mother d. she and her

wife, Michael Aderhold who had been the husband of her Aunt Bersheba. He was
b. in 1809 & many yrs. her senior." Rev. Allen McWhorter was a Methodist

[This record sent by Davis McWhorter, Bethel, N.C., who adds that "David
McWhorter or McWhirter - the Bible uses McWhirter but they all used the o
later - is listed in the Chester Co., Pa. tax lists in the 1760's. The
family removed to Rutherford Co., N.C. about 1770. In the Rev. War David
performed patriotic service as a blacksmith & desc. claim that as a result of
serious wounds received in the militia which caused his early death after the
Rev. After the Rev. he removed to Abbeville, S.C. where his estate was
administered in 1789 by his widow Mary. Some pages of his Bible are missing
that would have had other dates. The marriages given after the children's
names are from family records. The name of Dvid McWhorter occurs on one of
the pages of the Bible, indicating ownership. This was sent me by Mrs.
Shelly McWhorter Wright, Chattanooga, Tenn. in 1953."]

was a school master in Pickens Co., S.C. He is descended as follows: John
McWhorter (4), Moses McWhorter (3), Henry McWhorter (2), Moses McWhorter (1).
John is named as a son in his father's will (Moses) in 1797 in Edgefield,
S.C. The family 1st located in Lancaster Co., Pa. in 1750's. Later went to
Mecklenberg Co., N.C. & thence to Abbeville Co., S.C. John married his
distant cousin, Mary McWhorter, dau. of David & Mary {Poston} McWhorter of
upper S.C. This Bible record was sent me in 1937 by the owner, & a desc.,
Mrs. Lillian {Myers} Blackwell, Seneca, S.C. From John McWhorter's will in
1839 in Pickens Co., S.C. it is learned that Eliza Ann, dau. of John, m.
Robert M. Beaty."]
