Rev. Thomas S. Evans Dead
Oldest Citizen of Izard County Dies at age 98 Years.

Rev. Thos S. Evans of Newburg, one of the oldest citizens of the state and
one of the pioneer settlers of this county, died at his home at Newburg last
Saturday, October 9th.

"Uncle Tom" Evans lived to a ripe old age and his was a most useful and
well spent life. He was born in Virginia March 15, 1822, being married at
the age of 19 to Martha A. Neal in East Tennessee, who passed away September
21, 1899. He came to Arkansas in 1844 and settled in Searcy County, where he
taught his first school. He entered the ministry of the Methodist Church at
an early age and was engaged in religious work up until his health began to
fail him. He was associated with the early educational interests of this
part of the state and taught school in this section for many years. He bears
the distinction of having taught the first free school in the state. Rev.
Evans enjoyed the best of health until a short time back when he was
stricken with pneumonia, age so weakening his condition that he was unable
to withstand the illness.

He was the father of nine children, six living and five of these attended
the funeral which was held at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sunday, conducted
by Rev Noel S. Chaney of Melbourne. The deceased is survived by four
daughters and two sons, Mrs Susan E. Saunders, Mrs Nannie J. Jeffery and Mrs
E. A. Gifford of this county; Mrs M. S. Staggs of Blanchard, Okla., John C.
Evans of Cushman and James T. Evans of Batesville.
