Our date for the death of Thomas Jefferson Shrable. (05 May 1865 ) comes
from Erceil Shrable's book "Descendents of Thomas Jefferson Shrable".
The death date 1866 is on Thomas' tombstone, but Erceil said she found
the correct date "during my research in the archives". Erceil does
say that "He (Thomas) was still a C.S.A. soldier or in service when he
Another quote about Ruth Ann McCarty Barker Shrable says "Ruth made her
home with her daughter Martha Shrable Bryant in her later years of life
and she also drew a small pension just a few years before her death from
being a Civil War widow"
We would think that Thomas Jefferson Shrable's death date should be in
the Civil War pension records. These records are not included in the
Shrable book. Would anyone have access to these pension records? A
view of the original handwritten pension records may hold the answer.
One problem associated with a 1863 death date is the listing of Thomas
J. Shrable in Co A. Fristoe's Regiment, Missouri Calvary. This unit
began organizing in Southern MO and Northern AR in late 1863 and early
1864. The first action was early March 1864. This seems to put Thomas
Jefferson Shrable alive during late 1863 and early 1864.
