NOTE the Langston maiden name
Calico Rock Progress
Oct 4, 1929 - "Aunt Peggy" Whitfield Passes to Her Reward
Mrs Margaret Whitfield, better known to every one in this section as
"Aunt Peggy", died last Saturday morning at 11:30 o'clock, Sept. 28 at the
home of her son Rev. Y. Whitfield at Pineville, with whom she has made her
home for many years.
Her death was not unexpected, as she had been in feeble health for many
months past and has been confined to her bed for some time. She was 87
years, 6 months and 13 days of age.
Deceased was born in this county and township, her birthplace being
three miles northeast of here. All her life was spent here. Her maiden name
was Langston. On November 13, 1856, she was united in marriage to Mr Allen
Whitfield, this happy union being broken by the death of the husband 23
years ago. As a young woman, Mrs Whitfield united with the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church, at Union congregation, with which she remained a
faithful member till death, over a period of 75 years. She was a consistent
and active church worker and stood ready and willing at all times to aid in
any way in advancing the moral surroundings of her community and otherwise
performing her Christian duty. Those who knew her best will remember through
the coming years as a gentlewoman of loveliness and grace, possessed of fine
principles and noble heart. Her passing is an event of great sorrow to the
hosts who knew her and were associated with her though the years of a useful
life.
The funeral was held at Union Church Sunday at 2 p.m., services being
conducted by Rev. J. R. Jennings, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church of Calico Rock. Burial took place in the nearby Tremble Campground
cemetery. The largest gathering ever seen at that cemetery was present to
pay late respects to the deceased.
Deceased is survived by three sons and four daughters - Jasper
Whitefield of Little Rock; Casey L. Whitfield of Merriam, Kansas; Rev Y.
Whitfield of Pineville; Mrs E. L. Sanders of Pineville; Mrs Mary Moody of
Iuka; Mrs Tennessee Ivie of Cross Roads and Mrs Alice Clark of Brockwell.
Sixty-three grandchildren, 102 great grandchildren, 15
great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Aunt Polly Hively, also survive.
