Dolly, may just be a "nickname" with no particular meaning or maybe she just looked like a little "Doll", My Mom was given the nick name as "Twist" (because she was prissy"), I have an Aunt Bethel who was given the nick name "Dunk" (don't know why), . Aunt Dorothy was called "Dar". and several others that are unexplained, but the names stuck throughout their life time. If it were not for official records, such as death records, obits, etc. one might never know the true given name.

Bernie
Back in the late 1880 and early 1900's census and other records ussually used the name people new them as at the time. In the Fulton County marriage book my geat grandfather is listed as Walter Sexton when his given name was William Walter. He was always called Walter and when talking to one of his nephews who in 73 when I mentioned William Walter he didn't know who I was talking about but when I mentioneed just Walter a linght when off and he said "Oh Uncle Walt". So I would guess that most of the time that nicknames have something to do with a version of the persons name. Although one of Walter' s daughters I have always called and always heard her called Helen when in actually her given name is Ethel Louise. That story goes that someone wrote a letter Walter or Rosa's mother I believe and asked that the baby be named Helen but the baby arrived before the letter and was given the name Ethel Louise but she has been called Helen because that is what one of the Grandmother's
requested. She was born in 1916 and all of her legal documents come as Ethel Louise so how a person gets a nickname can be misterious. I have made notations in my records so that when I am go and someone else is looking at family history they will know the story. I am sorry that no one has left behind for you the story of Dollie's nickname.

I have a question for you all, that may sound silly? This is the first time
that I recall see Dollie used as a nickname............Mary or Martha Ellen
Langston Stuart?

Is the nickname usually associated with someone with that set of given
names? I ask because my great aunt was named Dollie Smith. That is the
only name that I have ever seen for her..............gravemarker, census
record, etc.

Just was wondering if she had another given name?

She only lists her father as Marvin Sexton and Mother as Dolly.

(1930 Izard Co., Guthrie TWP) House # 86 is Olen and Ruby (The name is
written as Steward instead of Stuart) House # 95 is Olens parents,
Taylor Wood Stuart.

Taylor Wood "Jonah" Stuart when he is Olen's father. So maybe I'm on the
right track after all any I was given the wrong name. Anything is possible.

the obituary the names and dates are just slightly off with what I have.
Don't know which is right. I don't have a list of my Marvin's children to
confirm anything. I will do some digging and let you know what I come up
with.
