Hi Jim:
I just wish I knew who Thomas J. Smith's parents were. (Not to be
confused with Bernie's Thomas Smith). I just last night found the marriage
license of Thomas J. Smith and Elizabeth C. Ball (Betty) in Iron County,
Missouri on September 1, 1872. There are several Balls in the census
records of Iron County, but I haven't had a chance to check them out. I'm
in the middle of tax season and can't do much looking from January through
April. Bernie and I keep thinking that her Thomas Smith and my Thomas Smith
have got to be related. There are several marriages with the Sinors and
lots of other things that connect them.
It is family legend that my Thomas J. came to Arkansas from Ellington,
Missouri (Reynolds County) and that he left there because of some family
incident--he got mad at a brother and thought he might have killed him--then
ran off to Arkansas and changed his name. But that doesn't make a lot of
sense if he got married in Iron County.
Maybe he moved to Arkansas and then went back to Missouri?? Another
