Melbourne newspaper - May 9, 1918 - Troy Forrest Killed in France

Authenticated news was received here this week of the death of Troy Forrest, which occurred on the western front in France on April 28.

Troy is the son and only child of Bedford and Mrs Forrest, who reside on the Ballard farm 4 miles east of LaCrosse and was about 21 years old.

Soon after war was declared by the United States on Germany Troy, with a number of other boys of Mammoth Spring, Fulton County, at which place he was living at the time, volunteered their services to their government, were accepted and sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo., where they were assigned to a regiment of regulars and were soon sent to France --- probably with the very first expeditionary forces and has been taking his turn on the firing line since last September.

Troy was a manly young fellow, brave as a lion, loved by his associates and a dutiful and obedient son. He had written several letters to his parents but had never mentioned the fact that he was on the firing line, preferring to spare his parents all the anxiety possible.

This so far as we know is the first blood of an Izard County boy to be spilled in France for the cause of liberty and justice, however there are several Izard County boys in that war-torn Republic.

To the parents of this most worthy son, the people f he entire county extend their sincere sympathy and trust the time will soon come when the armies of Uncle Sam, England and France will exact double toll from the war lords of Germany and her allies for every life lost in this great world conflict.
