Subject: [ARJOHNSO] Vandalism in Shropshire Cemetery, Pittsburg Twp.
Date: Sun, 2 Jun 2002 19:56:38 -0500
Dear List Members:
I'm sorry to report that vandals have once again unseated the two large
monuments marking the graves of the Flemming families, turned over the
military marker of Henry Shropshire and have broken the previously-repaired
military marker for the grave of Chaplain Foust. A turkey carcass had been
dumped and other marks of desecration were apparent when the local Family,
Career and Community Leaders of America* group met to work at the cemetery.
The Fleming stones were reset by the Ocker Monument Co. crew just last year.
They are not broken but will require professional help to place them back on
the bases.
This cemetery is one of the oldest in the township and contains the burials
of some of the early settlers. As the FCCLA continues to clean and clear the
area, more graves are being found. Members of the Fleming and Shropshire
families have expressed interest in helping to reclaim the cemetery from a
century of neglect. There is a bank account, The Shropshire Cemetery
Maintenance Fund, set up at Farmers Bank and Trust. Donations for fencing
materials will be gratefully accepted.
*FCCLA is the student vocational organization associated with Family and
Consumer Sciences, formerly known as Future Homemakers of America and Home
Economics. Students in this organization at Lamar High School have adopted
the Shropshire Cemetery as one of their community service projects. Their
efforts over the past three years have made a great difference but there is
still much work to be done.
