Hello all,
Glad to see that there has been activity on the list.
This is what I have found out about my grandfather:
His name was Minas H. Arikian, born in either 1882 or 1888 (different
documents have different dates). His parents are listed as Hagop Arikian and
Lucine Baghdasarian.

I wrote to the Armenian Genealogical Center and received this reply:

>>Dear Mrs. Chaplain,

In reply to your request we would like to inform you that, the
Genealogical Center has found out the following:
First of all the surname ARIKIAN is an Armenian surname and existed in
Maras, Turkey.
There is also information on Yaruthiwn (Haruthiwn) Arikian, who was born
in Maras in 1815, died in 1890. He was a merchand and on very friendly
terms with the Turks. For 38 years he acted as a member of
administrative council. He was honored by the Sublime Porte with the
"Mecidiye" and "Osmaniye" orders of the third class.

We hope that this information might be useful in tracing your ancestors,
as perhaps it will serve as another clue to open further information.

Sincerely,
Gagik Dumanian

Now for my questions:
1. What are is the Sublime Porte and the
"Mecidiye" and "Osmaniye" orders of the third class?
2. How can I prove/disprove that this is individual is related to my
grandfather?

Thank you for any help at all,
Mary Chaplain
