Sorry for the format of this note, from work it is the only way for me to
respond.

First of all, the Sublime Port was the seat of the Ottoman government in
Istanbul/Constantinople (or Bolis to many Armenians).

I am not family with the honors you mention - unfortunately, I cannot even
think of a source to go to on that.

There are books on Marash, although I am unsure whether they would supply the
necessary information on whether Haroutiun Arikian is a relative of yours. I
am surmising that if the Mormons have records on Haroutiun, then he may have
been a religious convert.

You mentioned having information on Minas Arikian dating to the 1880's,
however you did not mention if any of those records listed Marash as a place
of origin. Outside of conclusive records, I would say that a brief look into
how common or uncommon a name Arikian is, combined with knowledge that your
Arikian ancestors also hailed from Marash, would at least indicate a strong
possibility of Haroutiun being a relative of yours.

I would probably start by searching the phone directories of the United
States and Canada to find all the Arikian's. Depending on how big that list
is, I would start calling each one and asking then what they know about their
Arikian roots and the name and contact information of a family member with
the greatest knowledge on the subject. In this way, you can find out if all
Arikian's come from Marash, and also you can start piecing together just how
many different Arikian families there are.

This is really a good genealogical task for almost everyone out there. As I
always say, records last forever, people die and when they die, all the
information they have goes with them. So, the most important first step in
genealogy is to contact the people that may have information important to you
- the information thus acquired can always be verified later.

If you do not know how to go about such a search, let me know and I can give
you some help.

PS if you want the name of the book on Marash, I can supply it when I get
home.

<< Hello all,
This message is being sent a second time. I think there was a problem with
the first transmission. If this is a duplicate, I apologize.

This is what I have found out about my grandfather:
His name was Minas H. Arikian, born in either 1882 or 1888 (different
documents have different dates). His parents are listed as Hagop Arikian and
Lucine Baghdasarian.

I wrote to the Armenian Genealogical Center and received this reply:

>>Dear Mrs. Chaplain,

In reply to your request we would like to inform you that, the
Genealogical Center has found out the following:
First of all the surname ARIKIAN is an Armenian surname and existed in
Maras, Turkey.
There is also information on Yaruthiwn (Haruthiwn) Arikian, who was born
in Maras in 1815, died in 1890. He was a merchand and on very friendly
terms with the Turks. For 38 years he acted as a member of
administrative council. He was honored by the Sublime Porte with the
"Mecidiye" and "Osmaniye" orders of the third class.

We hope that this information might be useful in tracing your ancestors,
as perhaps it will serve as another clue to open further information.

Sincerely,
Gagik Dumanian

Now for my questions:
1. What are is the Sublime Porte and the
"Mecidiye" and "Osmaniye" orders of the third class?
2. How can I prove/disprove that this is individual is related to my
grandfather?

Thank you for any help at all,
Mary Chaplain
