*Transcriber's comment:
Men marked thus *were of an age which would have them to have fought in
the Civil War. Look for their records. They might be found at
<http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm>
More than a million such records, both USA & CSA, are at that site and
it grows as volunteers keyboard more entries--600,000 entries were put
into the site the first year it was open.
Paper copies of USA records are available at:
National Archives & Records Administration,
8th & Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC 20408.
Arkansas CSA Civil War Records are available at:
Arkansas History Commission & State Archives,
One Capitol Mall
Little Rock, AR 72201
1-501-682-6900
-----------------------
Also, all men 17 - 55 years old were required to register for WWI in 1917.
Photographs of these record cards are available both in the various
state and federal archives.
---------------------
These persons should appear in the appropriate federal censuses, 1790 -
1880 and 1900 - 1930.
---------------------
Birth records prior to 1914 are generally not available in AR.
However, by special arrangement with the Arkansas Health Department,
Vital Records Division, the Arkansas Genealogical Society has published
a CD-ROM with about 80,000 "prior" birth records. These are of persons
born 1874-1914 and who applied as mature persons for an official Birth
Certificate in 1942 or later so they could take a defense job or serve
in the armed forces. I am one of those who made a similar application in
1945. To order these records, list the Name of the person, name of
his/her mother, year born, county born. binder number, volume number,
and certificate number, as below:
MAYS, Charley Obediah, mother Alice FOSTER, Clay County, (Piggott) 24
Dec 1897, Year 1942, Binder 1, Volume 176, Certificate 1733.
MAYS, Charlie Franklin, mother Ada Jane WOOLUM, Calhoun County, 05 Jul
1893, Year 1942, Binder 1, Volume 176, Certificate 1734.
MAYS, Hannibal James, mother Alice COWNTS, Grant County, 20 Feb 1898,
Year 1942, Binder 1, Volume 176, Certificate 1741.
MAYS, Harvey Lee, mother Louetta WILKINS, Calhoun County, 18 Mar 1900,
Year 1942, Binder 1, Volume 176, Certificate 1743.
MAYS, Jesse Grant, mother STOTTS, Sarah Margaret, Craighead County, 08
Apr 1898, Binder 1, Year 1942, Volume 176, Certificate 1744.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Ed
