Services for W.H. Gibson Held Thursday
Prominent Barton citizen died suddenly Wednesday night
Funeral service for W. H. Gibson, 62, who died suddenly Wednesday night about 10:45 o'clock at his home at Barton following a heart attack, were held yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Barton Church, conducted by Rev. T.H. Jordan, pastor of the Central Baptist Church, Hot Springs,
assisted by Rev. Lawrence E. Green, Baptist minister of Barton. Interment was at LaGrange.
Mr. Gibson had been in ill health for about 11 days, however, his death was unexpected.
Born at LaGrange, Mr. Gibson came to Barton 35 years ago and for the past 33 years had been postmaster at Barton where he operated a general merchandise store and was also the owner of extensive [f?]arming interests
in that community.
Interested in civic affairs, he was secretary of the Barton-Lexa Consolidated School Board and gave the 10 acres of ground at Barton on which the present modern school plant is located. He was widely known throughout Eastern Arkansas and was one of the outstanding citizens of Phillips county.
Surviving besides his wife, Mrs. Etta Gibson of Barton, is one daughter, Mrs. V. J. Oldham, West Helena; two sons, Claude R. Gibson, and J. B. Gibson both of Barton; three sisters, Mrs. Essie Hawkins, Mrs. Minnie Gibson and Mrs. Bell Barbee, Barton; one brother, J. B. Gibson, Barton, and five grand children.
Pall bearers included Active -- J. B. Weedman, George Kloene, John C. Campbell, C. T. Treadway, Ed C. Hoffard, B. A. Sugg, Theo Bautts, L. O. McClendon and F. C. Curtis, members of the Barton-Lexa Consolidated School
Board.
Honorary -- R. A. Cooper, Vernon Mathis, Gus Robbins, Sr., Dr. W. R. Orr, Dr. J. B. Ellis, Dr. W. C. Russwurm, Peter A. Deisch, Ruber Martin, Carr Turner, Mason, Elmer and Tom Oldham and R. L. Brooks.
Keeshan - Lambert Comany was in charge of all arrangements.
