Hi Linda,
Have you tried the Soundex? I had some relatives in Polk Co.
in 1900. I looked at the census twice trying to find them, but
there are some areas on that film that seem damaged by
excess light. Someone suggested to me that the people
doing the soundex had sometimes used the original records,
so I searched the soundex and there they were. When I went
back to the film and had a copy made of the appropriate spot,
we darkened it as much as possible and could faintly see
enough to tell that the names were as reported on the soundex.
But I would never have been able to read the census film.
Also, by ordering the soundex you could determine if the people
were in an adjacent county. It seems to me that Howard Co. was
formed about that 1875 from parts of Polk Co. and others. If they
were in eastern Polk Co. in 1870, they might be in Howard Co.
in 1880.
Good luck,
Jeanie
