Obituaries

JENNIFER RENA' WADKINS, 24, of Pocahontas, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Maynard. She was born in Jonesboro, Feb. 7, 1979, a daughter of Belinda and Bobby Rice of Pocahontas and the late Thomas Walter Smith. Her maternal grandfather, Bruce Womble Sr., and her paternal grandparents, Howard and Juanita Smith, also preceded her in death. In addition to her mother and stepfather, she is survived by a daughter, Taylor Mckenzie Smth of Pocahontas; a stepson, Hunter Daniel Wadkins of Walnut Ridge; a brother, Christopher Aaron Smith of Racine, Wis.; a half brother, Tommy Hajostek of Watertown, Wis.; a stepsister, Briana Rice of Pocahontas; a half sister, Becky Klawkiowski of Waukesha, Wis.; and maternal grandmother, Betty Womble of Pocahontas. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Chapel of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home with Carl Massey officiating. Burial followed in Gravesville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Jack and Harold Snow, Billy Poe Jr., Paul David Billips, Larry Poe and Mi!

WANDA LEE HAUSMAN, 79, of Pocahontas, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born Nov. 26, 1923, in Randolph County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Elsie (Lindsey) VanWinkle. She was a retired inspector for ESNA. Her husband, Louis Hausman, also preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Rudy Hausman and Louis Hausman, both of Pocahontas; and a daughter, Loretta Layton of Bay City, Texas; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Delma Raglin, also of Pocahontas. A rosary service was held Sunday evening in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Monday morning in St. John's Catholic Church at Engelberg with Rev. David Jacobs officiating. Burial followed in St. John's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe, Billy and Tony Hausman, Ronnie Layton, Thomas VanWinkle and Gary Dixon.

ANDREW JOHN PLATT, infant son of Tim and Lisa (Arguetta) Platt of Pocahontas, was born and died Friday, May 9, 2003, at the Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers, Michael Platt, Calvin Platt, Justus Platt and Matthew Platt, all of Pocahontas; his grandparents, Alex and Mary Arguetta and Robbie and Gloria Pruitt, all of Tucson, Ariz. Graveside services were held Sunday afternoon at Brockett Cemetery with Tim Platt officiating. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

DANIEL STACY WADKINS, 28, of Maynard, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at his home there. Born Sept. 18, 1974, in Fort Mead, Md., he was a son of Henry Wadkins of Clarksville, Tenn., and Wanda Johnson Wadkins of Walnut Ridge. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Hunter Wadkins of Walnut Ridge; a stepdaughter, Taylor Smith of Maynard; two brothers, Eric Johnson of Hoxie and Michael Wadkins of Indiana; a stepbrother, Benjamin Wadkins, and a stepsister, Jodi Sewell, both of Tennessee; and his grandmother, Ethel Wadkins of Ocala, Fla. His wife, Jennifer Wadkins, a sister, Marsha Wadkins, and grandparents, Burl and Edna Johnson and LeRoy Wadkins preceded him in death. The body was cremated. McNabb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

JESSE J. SPENCE, aged 82, of St. Louis, Mo., died April 16, 2003, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. He was born Sept. 9, 1920 in Cushman, Ark. His father was a Pocahontas barber in the 1930s. He was a 1938 graduate of Pocahontas High School. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Carter of Illinois. He married Reba Maxine Johnson on Sept. 10, 1938. He is survived by his wife, of the home; a daughter, Reba Strayhons of Dittmer, Mo.; four sons, Jerry Spence of Korea, Robert Spence of Crestwood, Mo., James Spence of St. Louis, Mo., and Kenneth Spence of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother, the Rev. Harol Spence of Little Rock; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Hoffmeister Colonial Chapel, St. Louis, April 21, with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery there.

SAMUEL H. THIGPEN, 55, of Pocahontas, died Thursday, May 8, 2003. He was born Feb. 22, 1948, in Ponchatoula, La., a son of the late Harold and Nelda (Wells) Thigpen. He served his county in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Thigpen of the home; a son, James Berger of California; a daughter, Jessica Overton of Germany; four grandchildren; two brothers, Billy Thigpen of Georgia, and donald Thigpen of Pope Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Patricia McLain of Covington, La., Judy Jenkins of Folsom, La., Sharon Reid of Covington, La. and Jennifer Beltran of Michigan. Memorial services were held Monday in the Chapel of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home with Perry Vandergriff officiating.
