MEN IN SERVICE
Mrs. Shirley Ward Phillips received word her son, Tommy A. Wooley, was
promoted to sergeant while with a U.S. Marine Security Guard Attachment at
the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana.
The U.S.S. Guadalcanal, home ported in Norfolk, Va., has named Aviation
Electrician's Mate Ted Wicker, son of Mr. & Mrs. Shelby Wicker, Pocahontas,
as Sailor of the Month of June.
Charles V. Ellis, son of Mrs. Janis Ellis, Walnut Ridge, was promoted to
first lieutenant while serving as executive officer of Co. B, 25th Supply
Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division at Sheffield Barracks, Hawaii.
Jerry D. Hobbs, son of Mr. & Mrs. Dean Hobbs, Rt. 1, Thayer, Mo., was
promoted to senior airman at Kelly AFB, Tex.
Navy Airman Recruit George C. Bergman, son of Mrs. & Mrs. Leo Bergman,
Pocahontas, has completed recruit training at the Naval Training Ctr., San
Diego, Calif.

Frank Newson Jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Newson Sr., Pocahontas, Rt. 2, was
one of nine First Class Petty Officers selected for promotion to Chief
Radioman, U.S.N. His bro., Boatswain Mate First Class Lanite W. Neson, is
serving aboard the USS PCE (C) 873, operating from Norfolk, Va.
Pfc. Oral Kit Carson, son of Mr. & Mrs. J.M. Carson, O'Kean, is located with
the 58th Quartermaster Salvage Co., Korea.
DEATHS
Alfred Berton Shaver, aged 77, Church of Christ minister, died at his home
at Stokes early Tues.
Augustus J. Gephart, aged 73, died at his home on Rt. 1, Imboden, June 26.

ROSE ELLA DUNN KIRK, 90, Biggers, died Sat., June 23, 2001, at Greene Acres
Nursing Home, Paragould. She was born Nov. 1, 1910, Biggers, a dau. of the
late Albert & Birdie (Shaver) Dunn. Funeral services will be held today
(Thur.) in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Ben Williams officiating,
burial will be in Hite Cem., Biggers.
FRED E. SMITH, 73, Dalton, died Tues., June 19, 2001. He was born in Waco,
Tex., Nov., 18, 1927, a son of the late Thomas & Eula Pedigo Smith.
Surviving is his wife, Beatrice Pledger Smityh of Dalton. Funeral services
were held June 21 in the Chapel of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home with Calvin
Botard officiating, burial was in Upshaw Cem.
LUCILLE JOHNSON GENTRY, Arnold, Mo., died June 15, 2001. Graveside services
were held June 19, at Johnston Cem., near Reyno. Funeral services were held
at Arnold Church of Christ, Arnold, Mo. She was born Sept., 3, 1910, a dau.
of the late Joe H. (Big Four) & Minnie Fowler Johnson. Her husband, Jeffery
Gentry, also preceded her in death.
HELEN LOUISE GIRARD, 63, Pocahontas, died Mon., June 25, 2001, at Pocahontas
Nursing & Rehab Ctr. She was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Evergreen, Ark., a dau.
of the late Joe & Francis (Stringer) Hufstedler. She is survived by her
husband, Vernon Girard, of the home. Graveside services will be held today
(Thur.) in Randolph Memorial Gardens with Teep Wicker officiating. McNabb
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
ELVA HAMBRICK, 90, Reyno, died Fri., June 22, 2001. She was born Jan. 29,
1911, in Biggers, a dau. of the late Marion Francis Morrow & Mary Gazaway.
Her husband, Guy Hambrick, also preceded her in death. Graveside services
were held Sun. at Johnston Cem. near Reyno. Cox-Waymon Funeral Home directed
the services.
LINDA D. TAYLOR, 42, Granite City, Ill., died Fri., June 12, 2001, at her
home there. She was born Feb. 8, 1959, in Doniphan, Mo., a dau. of Maudena
Collins Smith & the late Leman Smith. In addition to her mother, she is
survived by her husband, Danny Taylor of the home.
VERNON L. BEAN SR., 74, Park Hills, Mo., died June 15, 2001, in Belleview
Valley, Mo. He was born in Reyno, Aug. 21, 1926, a son of the late William &
Veda Bean. He was married to Doris Johnson on Oct. 12, 1962. Funeral
services were held June 19, in the Coplin Funeral Home in Park Hills, Mo.,
with Rev. Jay Lacey & Rev. Ed. Stovall officiating, interment was in the
Mann Cem.
