Franklin Delano Allen, 61, of Mulberry died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in
Mulberry. Frank was a very Godly man, devoted to his wife of 40 years, his
children, and his grandchildren. He was also an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
A retired ironworker, he served 25 years with the 148th Evac Unit of the
National Guard. While in the guards, he achieved the rank of staff sergeant,
serving as a medic and a cook. Frank was a 32nd Degree Mason in Lodge No.
232 in Waldron and a member of First Baptist Church of Mulberry.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Mulberry under
the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Mulberry. Masonic graveside service
will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lamb Cemetery in Waldron.
He is survived by his wife, Greta Sherrill Allen; a daughter, Sherrilleta
Foster and husband Seth of Fort Smith; a son, Sean Allen and wife Marsha of
Van Buren; two brothers, Dan Allen of Harvey and Kennith Allen of
Holebrooke, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Cole and Caly Allen and Sydney
Foster.
Pallbearers will be Fred Moon, Johnny Crocket, John Moody, Jeff and David
Marvin and Ray Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Moody, Mark Newman, John Noggle, Jimmy
Moore, Larry Goodnoh and William Toby.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral
home.

Carolyn McElroy, 61, of Texarkana, Texas, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in a
Dallas hospital. She was born Dec. 27, 1941, in Fort Smith. She was a
homemaker and a loving mother and wife and a member of First United
Methodist Church in Texarkana.
Survivors include her husband, John McElroy of Texarkana; her son, John H.
"Jay" McElroy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her daughter, Elizabeth A. "Libby"
McElroy of Lowell; one brother, Charles Parks of Louisville, Ky.; a niece,
Amanda Parks of Louisville; a nephew, Garrett Parks of Louisville; her
grandchildren, Diana, Amber-Renee and Adam; one great-grandchild; and a
number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United
Methodist Church in Texarkana with the Rev. Don Lewis officiating. Interment
will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery in Ozark. The family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at East Funeral Home of Moores
Lane, Texarkana.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
in Memphis.

Katheryn V. Dean, 79, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in her
home. She was a retired bookkeeper, a former owner and operator of Bill Dean
Heating and Air and a former member of Women in Construction. She was a
member of numerous civic and church organizations. She was a Methodist.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort
Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Bill M. Dean; a daughter, Nancy K. Dean of
Fort Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Paige and Carmella Dean of Richmond,
Texas; a brother, Rudolph Burrough of Fort Smith; a grandchild, Nancy M.
Dean of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will visit with friends from 10 a.m. to noon today at the funeral
home.

University, Little Rock, AR 72207.

John J. "Jack" Helfrich, 73, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in
Fort Smith.
He was a retired engineer for the Whirlpool corporation, a member of
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where he
was state deputy and state master of the fourth degree, honorary life member
of the Westside Nut Club of Evansville, Ind., and past president of the
Whirlpool Management Club.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home. Funeral will be 10 a.m.
Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross
Cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; three daughters, Terri and husband Steve
Haaser of Fort Smith, Jane and husband Dick Wakefield of Fort Smith and Anna
and husband Jeff Kupers of Vicksburg, Miss.; five sons, Peter and wife
Christine Helfrich of Salt Lake City, Donald Helfrich of Longview, Texas,
Lt. Col. Kenneth and wife Cathy Helfrich of Jacksonville, N.C., Matthew
Helfrich of Lavaca and Thomas and wife Danielle Helfrich of Stevensville,
Mich.; two sisters, Donna Rowlett of Newburg, Ind., and Mary Brown of
Napersville, Ill.; a brother, William F. Helfrich of Evansville, Ind.; 20
children and one great grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Peter, Donald, Kenneth, Matthew and Thomas Helfrich,
Joel Haaser and Justin Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Clabber Club and the Retired
Whirlpool Breakfast Club.
The family will visit with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral
home.

Johnny Downs
SALLISAW - Johnny Downs, 28, of Sallisaw died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in
Sallisaw. He was a carpet layer and a Protestant.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Akins Cemetery northeast of
Sallisaw under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by his fiancee, Connie Hilliard of Sallisaw; three
stepchildren, Avery, Craig and Audrey Hilliard, all of Sallisaw; Kenneth and
Debbie Downs of Sallisaw; his maternal grandmother, Wanda Jones of Sallisaw;
his paternal grandfather, Lucion Downs of Holtville, Calif.; two sisters,
Lacresah Kendrick of Muldrow and Michelle Damron of Grand Junction, Colo.;
and two brothers, Kenny and Michael Downs, both of Sallisaw.

Nhan Tran
Nhan Duy Tran, 86, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in a local
hospital. He was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Hai Duong, Vietnam. He was a retired
clerk and typist and of the Buddhist faith.
Funeral will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith. The
body will be cremated.
He is survived by two daughters, Phuong Thi Tran of Fort Smith and Hong Thi
Tran of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; three sons, Hung Duy Tran of Irvine, Calif.,
Giao Dang Tran of Fort Smith and Loe Bao Tran of Ho Chi Minh; a brother,
Huong Bui of Houston; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

OZARK - Anna Lee Owen, 85, of Ozark died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in a Fort
Smith hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.

the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Ridenour of Park Hill, Okla., and
Gail Owen of Fort Smith; a sister, Betty Marsh of Atkins; a brother, Tommy
Freeman of Russellville; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lillian Harris
PENCIL BLUFF - Lillian Faye Harris, 55, of Pencil Bluff died Sunday, Jan.
12, 2003, in her home. She was a housewife and a Baptist.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Roberts Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in
Booneville with burial at Carolan Cemetery near Booneville.
She is survived by her husband, James Phillip Harris; four sisters, Alma
"Ann" Thomas of Sims, Darlene Bates of Newalla, Okla., Jean Moore of
Booneville and Thelma Little of Mansfield; and two brothers, Ray Ware of
Abbott and D.W. Ware of Mansfield.
Pallbearers will be Jeff and Stacey Klingaman, Randy Scoma, Jeff Thomas,
Marie Trusty and Terri Faye Jenkins.

Freda Womack
CENTRAL CITY - Freda Mae Womack, 85, of Central City died Sunday, Jan. 12,
2003, in Charleston. She was a homemaker and a member of Cavanaugh Freewill
Baptist Church in Fort Smith. She was the widow of Eugene Debbs Womack.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cavanaugh Freewill Baptist Church with
burial at Mayberry Cemetery in Central City under the direction of Fentress
Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Lora Hart of Greenwood; two sons, Kenneth
Womack of Cushing, Okla., and Don Womack of Central City; two sisters, Lela
Harmer of Tulsa and Marie Bolejack of Berryville; three brothers, Weldon,
Marvin and Jimmy Skinner, all of Cushing; 14 grandchildren, 21
great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be R.A. Leonard, Jim Grubb, Jim Fisk, B.J. Caperton, Wayne
Davis and J.E. McKinney.

Harold Weeks
Harold H. Weeks, 76, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in the home.
He was a retired engineer at Whirlpool, a Navy veteran of World War II and a
former volunteer for Mercy Hospice.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the U.S. National Cemetery in
Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Faye; two daughters, Alice Bonanno of New York
and Linda Ewald of Caro, Mich.; a son, Harvey Weeks of Plano, Texas; two
stepsons, William and Wendell Westfall, both of Van Buren; a sister, June
Crosby of Caro; five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

Wendell Westfall and Christopher Ewald.

J.L. Wilhelm, 67, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in his home. He
was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Charleston. He was a retired salesman, a jet
mechanic, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of VFW,
American Legion and DAV.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort
Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith.
He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Ballard of Van Buren, Midge
Truett of Fort Smith and Gayle Lowe of Dorset, Ohio; a sister, Goldie
Pollock of Roland; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
