My Great Grand Father was John William WALSH married to Laura Clayton. He
had a grocery store in Hardy. There is a picture of the store in the book
about Hardy. What I show below is a possible parentage and siblings for him.
So far I have found no definitive proof that the information is correct.

I'm looking for the ancestry of John William WALSH/WELCH. It has been a
brick wall for some time. I don't know why the name change would have
occurred, but a relative that still lives near Hardy once told me that no
matter how it's spelled it is always pronounced Welch. It could have been
the census taker got it wrong in 1880, or......................... Every
time I have had the opportunity to get to Izard County the court house has
been closed so I have not had much luck being able to search their records.
Because most of my families life seems to have taken place in, and around,
Hardy I chose to start here.

Related family names in/around Hardy are RICHARDSON, WISE, CLAYTON, and
indirectly SELLERS, RUSSELL. Both the RICHARDSON and WISE families are very
well documented, but looking through the myriad WALSH/WELCH/WELSH families
is a daunting task.

Any help with the WALSH/WELCH line is greatly appreciated

1.John H. Welch was born in 1843 in Tennessee.

In the 1880 Izard County Arkansas census the last name is given as WELCH not
WALSH.

Possible this John:
10th Tennessee, Company H Rank: Corp _Age: 21 _Enlisted: July 1 62 Mustered:
Aug 26 62 _Remarks: Was privt fr enrollment to Oct 13 64


John married Mary Margaurite _____________ [Given as Traffort on the
headstone in the family plot]. Mary was born on 12 Feb 1851 in Tennessee.
She died on 8 Dec 1918 in Hardy Arkansas.

She is buried in the Walsh family plot in Hardy Arkansas. I have put her as
the wife of John H. Welch because in the 1880 Izard County Arkansas census
his wife is listed as Mary, and the dates match [as do the dates for John
William ]. I'm not sure if TRAFFORT is a maiden name or a married name.


John and Mary had the following children:

2Mii.John William (Walsh) Welch was born on 22 Sep 1868 in Tennessee.
He died on 16 Jan 1940 in Hardy Arkansas. John married Laura L. Clayton .
Laura was born on 9 Nov 1873 in Arkansas. She died on 27 Aug 1923 in Hardy
Arkansas. Will and Laura are buried in a family plot in the center of the
cemetery in Hardy Arkansas.

2Miv.George F. Welch was born in 1873 in Tennessee.

2 Mv.Samuel G Welch was born in 1875 in Arkansas.

2Mvi.Robert L Welch was born about 1877 in Arkansas.
Robert married Jessie A. _______. Jessie was born about 1878 in Arkansas. My
father was raised by John and Laura. He tells of an "Uncle Bob" that came
for visits about once a year during his time there.

Others buried in the WALSH family plot in Hardy are :
M. L., b. 1892, d 1896 ( No other information )
Clarence William Walsh, b. 1897, d. 1964 ( My Grand Father )
Seems like there was another person but I don't have time this morning to
look through my files. Possibly Melvin Walsh, b. 1908, d. 1930
