You can contact the VB Co. courthouse, the address is on the
site.....or you can order the microfilm from your local LDS library and go
through it. If you've never used an LDS library - these is one in all the
LDS churches....which you probably have in your town or very close by.
The film cost is $6 and they will keep it for several weeks at your
local location for you to use. Takes about 2 weeks to come in. I "think"
I have also posted a list of the film available on the site....maybe on
the Whats New page as sometimes they are hard to find on the LDS
library site.

Hi Reba, That is Prettyman Berry (grandpa used a phonetic spelling). The book is wrong though, the gravemarker says 1788 - 1903. That was probably a typo when they printed the book.
However, records show that he was born in 1814.
I did ask for alternate spellings. I've seen Prettyman Berry, Purtiman Berry, Pritemon Berry, Berry Prettyman, Barry Prettymon etc. Probably about twenty various spellings. No one can believe that a man was named Prettyman. He was named after his grandfather, Prettyman Berry.

My husband was born 1922 in Cleburne Co, AR at his parents home. His younger brothers were also born at home, in Conway County, as late as 1930. None of their births were recorded. They all had to get Delayed Birth Certificates when they had to enter the Service in WW II.

Also, for giving the Vital Statistics people credit - when they could not find a Delayed Birth Certificate for my husbands mother or the Death Certificate for the above mentioned Grandfather, I received, much later, a letter from Vital Statistics stating that they had searched other Counties and could not find any record for these two.

For these early births and deaths your best chance for a record is an obituary or birth announcement in a newspaper. The abstracts of the Morrilton Newspapers in Conway Co, AR is a treasure trove of information. Those small town weekly newspapers had "reporters" in all of the small communities around.

Hi, Many years ago I looked for a death certificate for my ancestor, Prettyman Berry, who died in Van Buren County, Arkansas in 1903. I don't remember the details (it's been MANY years ago) but I do remember that the State of Arkansas couldn't find a death certificate for him.

I still want to find one, and I'm wondering if there would be anywhere else that I could look? Or, would it do any good to send the State of Arkansas Vital Records more money (they keep the money regardless of whether they find any information or not) just in case they missed it the first time around? I know my Aunt's birth certificate can't be found (possibly because the handwritting was bad and filed under some other name) and I know she had a birth certifcate because her mom said she did and all of her brother's and sisters had one.

I will apparently have to go to Arkansas and look myself when I can afford to go back there (I live in Oregon).

Meantime, is there maybe a local place that might have a death certificate for him? Would death certificates from 1903 be filed in more than one place (like maybe the county)?

My ancestors are from Van Buren County as well, and we made a trip there
three years ago and found the Van Buren County Historical Society in Clinton
very helpful and volunteers very knowledgeable. Perhaps they could help
you search long distance.
