Hi All
I have a similar problem with the ASHDOWN and DALTON names in the Crayford
and Swanley areas of Kent. John ASHDOWN married Susan DALTON in 1823
Sutton-at-Hone. Ellen Matilda, their daughter, is sometimes referred to as
ASHDOWN, sometimes as DALTON. John is referred to on Ellen's marriage
certificate as John ASHDOWN DALTON. John's occupation was given on one
occasion as musician, on another as labourer. Ellen Matilda married
Cornelius TAGG in 1845 and they emigrated with 4 boys to Sydney in 1855 on
the 'Rose of Sharron'. One son died on the voyage. 2 girls born here in
Australia. On one daughter's birth certificate she is referred to as Ellen
Matilda DALTON. Curious.
Cheers

> I am looking for a JAMES ASHDOWN who was nominated as the father of George
SHEDER (SHEADER) from Mary SHEDER in IDEN Sussex born 1814. This George
arrived in Australia as SHEADER and then changed his name to ASHDOWN within
2-3 years of arriving. He brought with him a wife JANE (CARMAN ) whom he
married in 1835. They had with them 2 children James, and Mary Jane who
later became my great grandmother when she married George MILLS who had
originated from Widford Oxfordshire, born 1829.
