MARY ANN GIBBS MARRIAGE IN 1849 @ WOLVERTON from mail list entry could be
sisterr to John Gibbs

My name is Debbie from upstate New York and I am pleased to have
discovered this very active and informative group. I'm researching
Cabells and Gibbs in Somerset. GGGrandfather Robert Cabell(26) married
Mary Ann Gibbs (20) on 25 Dec 1849 in the Parish of Wolverton. Cabell
is spelled "Cable" on marriage cert. Witnesses Jane Cable and Edward
Fricker. Both fathers named John and listed as weavers. 1841
Woolverton census lists John Cabbell(65), Mary Cabbell(61)and Robert
Cabbell(15). Although Mary would have been 46 when Robert was born,
this is the only clue I have as to Robert's parents. I would be
grateful for any thoughts or information which might help me prove or
disprove this John and Mary as Robert's parents.
Thank you,
Deb

Perhaps Mary Ann's father is your John's uncle. Very possible, I think.
I have some evidence that Mary Ann was born in Beckington. The Beckington
marriages include a John Gibbs marrying an Ann Godwin in 1829. A possiblity
for Mary Ann's parents. Come to think of it, the listing for John Gibbs and
Ann Godwin lists John as as "Widow"(er), so your John could also have been
my John's son by an earlier wife. Definitely need to do more research.

given his mother's maiden name (Martin). He had one sister, and three
brothers. Martin's parenets were born in England. They met married then
traveled to America and settled in Muskegon, Mi. Martin's father was the
pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal in Muskegon when he decided to do missionary
work in the Dakotas with several different Indian tribes. Life proved too
rough for the five children, so he sent them back to Muskegon for his
parents to raise. He was class treasurer of his high school class. Martin
could play 9 different musical instruments. He walked to work every day. He
had a unique walk. He lifted his right knee waist high with each step. He
smoked a pipe. He had a pipe stand next to his chair that held many
different shaped pipes. For birthdays and Christmas everyone gave him pipe
tobacco. Martin was a strict father and a demanding man, but he was always
kind. He died of a stroke.[Ashley Tree.FTW]

Grandpa Martin Ashley was born in South Dakota, and raised in Muskegon by
his fathers parents. On June 21, on a Wednesday afternoon, in 1905, Martin
graduated from Muskegon High School. He was class treasurer. Around 1908,

She loved to make flowers and once published a book of poetry. She could make
every kind of flower anyone asked for. Most of her orders were roses,
violets, and daisies, but she also loved to make Sweet Williams, Bachelor
buttons, and Iris. People would call and place an order for weddings,
birthdays, banquets, corsages, or anthing special that was needed. Grandma
Barbara had a desk, with several draws, set up in the corner of her dinning
room. Rows and Rows of every kind of flofwer petal imaginable was kept at
this desk. There were stems, centers, leaves, paints, and everything that
was necessary to create a flowerl. She would teach her children and
grandchildren how to make the flowers. Grandma made potatoe chips, baked
bread and churned butter. She also boiled fresh dandielion greens picked
from her yard.

Grandma Barbara Ashley kept Christmas better than anyone. Her house was
ablaze with colored light, and her festive decorations overwhelmed her
families hearts. Santa never failed to arrive on time at the Ashley
Christmas Eve party. He was the highlight for the grownups and the kids.
Grandma's fantasy villiage, with the white church, and tall steeple has
inspired many of her children, and grandchildren to display Christmas
villages in their own homes.

Quote from Grandma's poem "Santa In Person"

"So come now, and take your places,
When he calls your name,
join in the races;
For none of you will be forgotten,
By this jolly elf,
in red and cotton."

Notes for HERBERT THOMAS * ASHLEY:
Grandpa Herbs Navy records say he enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing the
saxophone, but he is better remembered by Vicki and his grandchildren as
being an avid golfer. Grandpa even had his daughter Vicki promise to scatter
his ashes on the golf course.Grandpa Herb was the most honest man I have
ever known, but he was no softy. He was a perfectionist and had big
expectations for all of us. Grandpa was a very hard worker. He could fix
just about anything. I remember seeing him busy on house projects every
weekend that he wasn't golfing. Grandma Lea and Grandpa Herb loved to
travel. They went on many wonderful vacations all over the world. I enjoyed
camping with them during my childhood. Grandpa could never stay in one spot.
They moved at least every three years and often sooner. Grandpa said he got
it from his mother Grandma Barbara who often told him, that she had been
kidnapped by gypsies as a young child. Grandpa loved to make money and was
always thinking up new ways to earn more. Once he made Vicki go door to door
selling soap for him. That didn't work out so well, as Vicki ruined a
clients floor demonstrating a "wonderful" oven cleaning product. Next, he
bought candy vending machines, which once again Vicki had to keep filled.
Turns out the mice ate more candy than the customers. After a customer paid
good money for a half eaten candy bar, Grandpa was once again out of
business. Then he got the bright idea to put Grandma to work in his own
donut shop. He got tried of staying up all night baking those fresh donuts.
Now thats a job I could have enjoyed helping him with! Finally, he
discovered real estate, and went into the landlording business, which he
taught to his daughter Vicki and her husband Jim. Grandpa's main career was
electronics engineering. He worked on many interesting projects. One summer
we lived in a hotel while Grandpa helped with the Minuteman Missle
installations. That summer I got hooked on Archie Comic Books. He worked on
many space projects for Autonetics Corp in conjunction with NASA. Grandpa
got laid off when the capsule he was quality control for caught on fire and
killed three astronouts. (Apollo). Grandpa stopped by to visit on his way
from Calif to New York. He had a top secret suitcase with him that he wasn't
allowed to talk about. Of course I was intrigued, but he wouldn't fill me
in. Years later he sent me a newspaper clipping of the Voyager mission and
said that was his secret project. After that he worked for the Government on
missile guidance systems for the Navy. I was always very proud of Grandpa
and loved him with my whole heart. Grandpa Herb died at his daughter
Vicki's house, after struggling with brain cancer for 5 months.
