LETTERS [just a reminder - these were written in 1987! /rea]
From: J. Warren Rowland, 404 Sunrise Lane, Rockford, IL 61107
... I have family lines by the name Atwood and Peck. ... my wife, Katherine
E. Rowland, published a 300 page family genealogy of her family and mine
covering a total of some 130 family lines which includes the above two
families. In this book she traced both families back to the immigrant
ancestor. The title of the book is "The Genealogy of James Warren Rowland
and his wife Katherine Elizabeth Taylor and Related Families". The book was
published in 1983 and copies are available from me for $25.00 plus $2.50 for
shipping and packaging.
Furthermore ... I have done quite a bit of work on the Atwood families who
settled in this country in the late 1830's in connection with an Early
Settlers Project which is being carried on by the North Central Illinois
Genealogical Society.
... if I can be of any help to you, please let me know.

... I have some information which may help the person searching for Ezra
Atwood who resided in Wisconsin in 1860. I have found him in the 1860
Census for Grant County in the town of Beetown.
... I am willing to exchange research time with anyone in Chatauqua Co. and
St. Lawrence Co. New York in exchange for my research time for them in the
Newberry Library in Chicago and the Federal Records Center in Chicago.

From: A17 Lois S Atwood, 515 East Grant Street #506, Minneapolis MN 55404
[Lois' letter references an article in the Atwood Ancestors, Vol VI No 4,
pp. 44-46. I suspect that is a typo and she is referencing something in Vol
IV. submitted by Nancy Atwood Sprague. /rea]
Lois writes:
There were two John Atwoods who came to the colonies in 1600s. There was
John who arrived here in 1635/6. He married Ann Lee. There were no
children. He reportedly came to the colonies because he had investments
here. Also, reportedly, he returned to England at least once and since no
grave has been found for him to date, it is thought he may have died in
England ... no proof that I have found.
It was this John who helped solve the problems of the Plymouth settlement
with their European sponsors (William Bradford's book re: the Plymouth
settlement).
According to the American Families Genealogical & Heraldic, this John was
"undoubtedly the second or fifth son of Nicholas and Olive. He was one of
the worthy pilgrims, was an assistant in 1638."
An from the Atwoods in America: "He was an Assistant Governor of Plymouth
Colony fir several years, and Treasurer of the Colony from 1641 to 1644 when
he died, leaving a wife Ann (Lee) but no children.
The above also appears in the Atwood Genealogoy by Grace Fielding Hall.
"Our" John came to the colonies in 1643 (at least he first appeared here at
that time). He married Sarah Masterson, daughter of Richard before 1649
(Plymouth Colony Marriages to 1650).
In the years I have been researching the Atwood, I have found the records of
these two Johns mixed several times. I have read that "our" John was the
brother, nephew and cousin of the John who arrived here in 1635/6. If he
was an elder brother why is he not listed as the son of John Atwood and Joan
Coleson?
By the way, the Shurtleff research of the descendants of John Atwood .... on
p 62 shows the following:
Here Lyes Ye Body

anial Atwood. She

1736 in Ye 77th year
of her age
This from the Lakenham Burying Ground, Carver, Massachusetts. From what I
have read, Mary Lucas would have been about 79 years old at that time.
