History of Little Nine Partners of Northeast Precinct and
Pine Plains, New York, Dutchess County (1897)
p7 - Meanwhile another company of land grabbers now appear, who
claim to have discovered some "vacant lands" belongin to the
Indians in Norther and Northeastern Dutchess, and July 8, 1702,
they say "that your petitioners being about to treat with the Indians
for vacant lands in Dutchess County, in this providence and in great
hopes to come to an agreement with them for the purchase therof"
Sampson, Broughton, & Co
This petition endorsed "Granted". Soon after obtaining this they
learn that "Leigh Atwood and others" had previously obtained a
license from Lieut. Govenor Nanfan to purchase these "vacant
lands" of the Indians, and that this license expired. Upon this
information they took measures to jump the claim of Leigh
Atwood and others by a petition of which this is a copy:
"To his excellency, Edward, Lord Viscount Cornbury, Capt General
and Govenour in Chiefe of Her Majesty's Province of New York in
America and Vice-Admiral of the same, in Council, Etc.
"The Humble Petition of Robert Lurting and Sampson Broughton for
themselves and Company, Most Humbley Sheweth, that there is a
certaine tract or parcell of unappropriated lands in Dutchess County,
in this province, which Leight Atwood, Esq and others obtained a
license from Capt Nanfan when he was Lieutenant Governor of the
said province, to purchase of the Indians in a certain limited space
of time, which is now elapsed and nothing done therin; wherefore
your Excellencies above Petitioners most humbly pray your
Excellency would be pleased to grant unto your said Petitioners,
a license to purchase the said unappropriated Lands of the Indians,
owners of the same.
"And your petitioners as in duty bound shall ever pay.
Robert Lurting
Samp. Broughton & Co

VA * MISS * GA
I am interested in finding information on John Atwood, born
ca1785 probably in Virginia. He married Elizabeth Coleman,
born ca1765-70 probably in Holland. John Atwood moved to Miss
and was listed on the 1820 census of Miss with wife, 3 male
children and 3 female children. From family information I can
account for 4 sons and 1 daughter: Jackson (possibly John
Jackson) Atwood, Henry Atwood, Washington (possibly G W)
Atwood, Andrew Atwood, and Betsy Atwood who married
Richard King. Jackson Atwood shows place of birth as Ga,
born 1 Jan 1800. Probably married in Ga, date unknown, to
Elizabeth Wood. children: James W, John B, Elbert, Lucy Ann,
America, Elizabeth Jane, Susan, Miriam, Aaron, Izilla, Syrentha
married to Neavon McNease, and India. I would like to know parents
of John Atwood, born ca1765 and where he was born. Family
records say Virginia. I would like to correspond with anyone who
is doing research on this John Atwood.
