I believe your Mehitable Atwood was the daughter
of James and Mercy (Young) Atwood. I have Mercy
as "aka" Thankful Young. Some have speculated that
they were two differant people, but I'm not so
sure.

I have the parents of Mercy Young, born Sep 1719,
to be Barnabas and Anne ( ) Young (see John Young
of Eastham, Mass and Some of His Descendants" by
Torrey). James Atwood and Mercy Young are recorded
in marriage on 4 Sep 1740 in Eastham, MA.

I also have a Thankful Young was born 8 Jan 1726
to Zebulon and Mercy (Sparrow) Young (see Mayflower
Births & Deaths v1 p223, Eastham VR) but cannot
find a marriage for her; and she would have been
only 14 years old in 1740.

Now we turn to James Atwood.... again I have James
Atwood, son of Eleazer and Joanna (Stout) Atwood,
and born on 31 Aug 1715, as the husband of Mercy
Young.

I also have a James Atwood, son of Israel and Hannah
(Studley) Atwood, born 29 Oct 1728. Now I also
have THIS James Atwood, married to an Asenath Higgins
on 11 May 1749.

Now, Mercy (Young) Atwood had her last child about
1755; I have no record of her death.

Aseneth (Higgins) Atwood had her last child about
1755 and died sometime after this; I have no record
of her death either.

Next, a James Atwood (which one I'm not certain)
married a Deborah Collins, on 29 Nov 1759; and
fathered a child, Deborah Atwood, in 1765.

Deborah Collins, was born in 1726, daughter of
Jonathan and Susannah (Walker) Collins; and Deborah
was previously married to a Store Arey.

Next, I have a James Atwood dying in 1765; and
another after 1790.

I don't think I've shed much light on the subject
for you, but I'm hoping that others out there might
be able to piece this together and fill in the
gaps <bg>
