James Triffitt was born in Yorkshire, England, was tried and sentenced to 7 years transportation. He sailed on the "Matilda" from Portsmouth on 27 March 1791, arriving Sydney on 1 August 1791, from where he was sent to Norfolk Island. He served his sentence and was created a constable and given a land grant. He had 2 sons, James Junr. and Thomas, to Mary Higgins. The family were transported to Tasmania on the "City of Edinburgh" in 1812 where he was given another land grant in the Derwent Valley area of New Norfolk.
