Wendy and Margaret,
As a coincidence my husband's 4GGrandfather owned Grose Farm in 1821. His name was Thomas Rushton and he was sent to VDL (via Port Phillip Bay) on the Calcutta in 1804 and then sent on to Sydney in 1804 to run the government brewery. The adjacent property was owned by his son-in-law William Chippindall The suburb Chippendale is where the properties were located on Black Wattle Creek and you can see where the suburb's name came from.

The following are listed in the NSW Colonial Secretary's Correspondence
Index for 1788-1825 available on-line at the NSW State Records Office site
(http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/). Some are too early for your man but may
be worth checking to eliminate. The records for the "Arab" do indicate that
the ship came on to Sydney after unloading its 152 male convicts in VDL:

I have a copy from the Hobart newspaper of the advertisement of his
certificate of freedom being issued in nov 1829
What is available to check where he was from 1822 to 1829.
