Hello again John,

You were very helpful to me some time ago. It is nice to hear from you
again.

Are you connected to any of these families?

The information you have provided seems to gel with a question I had on
William White jnr. On his obituary notice it was stated that he was born at
Nimmitabel and I didn't know how his family came to be in that area post the
1828 census. He married Sarah Higgins (daughter of Robert Higgins and Ann
Owen - both deceased by that time) at Goulburn in 1840. He, of course, was
very well known to the family.

I did know that William Scott worked for Elizabeth Macarthur. She endorsed
his Petition to His Excellency Lachlan Macquarie with the words "The
Petitioner I believe to be a sober, industrious man. I beg leave to
recommend him to your Excellency. E. McArthur".

Ann Higgins was the widow of Robert Higgins (who was a 'fellow passenger
:-))??' on the Admiral Gambier II). Two of Ann's daughters married William
Scott. The first was Ann's illegitimate daughter who arrived with her on
the Wanstead - Elizabeth Owen and when Elizabeth died, he married her
half-sister and Robert & Ann Higgin's daughter, Ann Eliza Higgins.

I am particularly interested in where you found the information on William
White.

Quite a surprise too to hear that George Merriman was also on that ship. My
grandfather purchased a ram from Sir Walter Merriman at Yass when I was
young. I remember my grandfather had a 'statuette' if that is the right
term, of a ram on his mantle piece from the Merriman family.

Regards,
Lyn

Lyn,

William White:
The 1828 census says that William White was working for William Scott as a
boot-maker at Camden. He was superintendent of Scott's 'Tom Groggin' lease
in the Snowy Mountains from 1830 to 1841. He left Scott in 1854 to work for
Dr. Throsby at 'Kybean' at £100 per year with double rations for a period of
2 years. Sometime after this William moved to the Long Swamp area near
Bungendore.

William Scott:
John and Elizabeth Macarthur's sheep expert?.

William left London on 25 April 1811 aboard the "Admiral Gambier" and
arrived in NSW on 29 September, 1811. Other men on that ship were William
White and Robert Higgins who were later linked by marriage. (Incidentally,
George Merriman was also on this ship. He was the great grandfather of Sir
Walter Merriman the famous fine wool breeder in the Yass area).

William was assigned to Elizabeth Macarthur and was employed by her until
1820 when he received his ticket of leave. He remained in the Camden -
Narellan area and stayed in that area until 1836.

By the time of the 1828 census William held 5000 acres, owned 2 horses, 48
cattle and 1010 sheep. Those listed as employees in that year were:
Jeremiah Buffey aged 37 - arrived 1813 aboard the 'Earl Spencer' -
stock-keeper living at Bargo.
Ann Higgins aged 37 - a convict via the ship 'Wanstead' in 1813 - possibly a
housemaid to William.
John Huran aged 28 - a convict via the ship 'Sir Godfrey Webster' in 1826 -
a labourer.
William James aged 18 - free immigrant who arrived on the 'Princess Royal'
in 1823 - a labourer at 'Wellington Valley' (this location unknown)
Joseph Mason aged 69 - arrived aboard the 'Neptune' in 1790 - a stockman at
Bargo.
Hugh O'Connell aged 38 - also arrived via 'Sir Godfrey Webster' in 1826 -
worked as a labourer at Camden.
William White aged 35 - arrived via the ship 'Admiral Gambier' in 1811 -
occupation boot-maker at Camden.

William moved to the Mulloon Creek area near Bungendore in about 1836.

This brief bit of info is from family and other sources collected over the
years.

Regards
John
