"LIMERICK TO QUEENSLAND: The Kearney Family Story", a family history
available in early 2006, tells the story of this Kearney family and
descendants. The book is published in hard-cover, over 250 pages, fully
indexed, with family trees and many portraits, and much general historical

John Martin KEARNEY (1808-1897) from Abington, Limerick, Ireland was a
stonemason, who immigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1863 with his wife,
Honorah LYONS (1802-1884), and several of their children.



They settled in Rockhampton, where John Martin and his sons operated a road
building business and hotels. They also had quarries outside Rockhampton
and were involved in the construction of the training walls in the Fitzroy
River to make it navigable.



Their story is told against the background of the early development of
Central Queensland with the construction of the railways, and towns, west to
Longreach.



Their children were:

1. Martin John KEARNEY (1833-1864) – married Bridget O’BRIEN – 3
children (other family names of descendants – GARDNER, SCHMIDT, DOONER)

2. Michael KEARNEY (1836-1863) – died in Ireland – no issue

3. William KEARNEY (1838-1875) – married Catherine LAWLESS – no issue

4. Thomas KEARNEY (1841-1880) – married Johanna RYAN – 7 children (other
family names of descendants – BRIDSON, AUSTIN, MURPHY, KERWICK, LINNING,
MELGERT, MARTIN, YOUNG, ALLEN)

5. Mary Catherine KEARNEY (1846-1903) – married Timothy P. CRANLEY – 6
children

6. James KEARNEY (1848-1874) – died in Rockhampton - no issue

7. Bridget Mary KEARNEY (1851-1938) – married William SHEEHY – 9
children (other family names of descendants – CHATTERTON, MURRAY).
