Hi,
The Vic BDM Pioneers Index does include events such as B D and M's for the
period prior to 1851 - starting at 1837 I believe.
Perhaps Valerie in Arizona would like to tell us the family names that she
is interested in - Victoria/Melbourne was a pretty small place way back
when - and somebody on this list may happen to have info. on Valerie's folk??
It is my understanding - in the very early days - although a few boats came
direct to Victoria from "the old world" - most people came to
Victoria/Melbourne via another Australian settlement - from somewhere in
Tasmania or from maybe Sydney.
Later - when the gold-rushes were on - let's say from 1851/2 onwards - most
immigrants came to Victoria on ships that had come direct from "the old
world".
Victorian writer and historian Michael Cannon - a few years ago - early
1990's? - wrote a book about Melbourne in the early days - entitled I think:
Old Melbourne Town - Before the Gold Rush. - I think the publishers were
Loch Haven books.
This book mentions a number of individuals - the lowly positoned as well as
those holding rank or authority - and has a pretty good index - sadly I
don't have a copy -
but I expect the better libraries could track one down if needed.
My wife has ancestors that were in Sydney from 1832 and in
Victoria/Melbourne from about 1847 - and I find this time fascinating.
I spent about 20 years working in the Melbourne business district - and it
was always interesting when walking around - passing small laneways,
crossing roads, to note how little the road layout had changed - and
connect historic indiviuals to the names of these roads lanes and other sites.
Does this make sense?
anyhow - come on Valerie - tell us all about it - we may be able to help?
good luck
Robert
