Williamstown Chronicle November 1st, 1856. Police Court report.
"Mudoch McIVOR, a seaman of the ship Ocean Chief, from Liverpool, was
charged at this Court, on Monday last, with deserting his wife at Geelong,
fifteen months ago. It appeared from the statement of the prosecutrix, that
the prisoner had left her, with the avowed intention of proceeding to
Melbourne, in the month of July, 1855, and that nothing had been heard of
him from that time till news reached her a few days ago of his arrival at
this port in the Ocean Chief. The prisoner admitted that he had not written
his wife since he left her at Geelong, but said that he had no intention of
deserting her altogether. the Captain of the Ocean Chief said that he was
willing to give the man his discharge when the ship was released from her
cargo; and as the prisoner promised to return to his wife on being released
from the ship, he was allowed to return to his duty in the Bay."
