Hi Judy,

I searched the SLV (state library of Victoria) catalogue, but there is also
a site called picture australia which is actually a better site to search as
it links to other collections as well as the SLV collection.
the addy is www.pictureaustralia.org

In it's introduction it says "The PictureAustralia service has been provided
for use by all Australians, to discover our heritage as documented in
pictures. Through a single access point, it is possible to search the
distributed image collections of many significant cultural institutions,
without having to know where the images are held."

Admittedly a signifigant amount of material that i've found on
pictureaustralia is from the SLV collection. :)
Also, have you had a look at Sue O'Neill's page of 19th century publicans?
