Hi Bill and Jacquie,

There was a book published some years ago which may turn up in some public
library in NZ, and which you might get hold of via inter-library loan. It
is called "On the Fall of the Hammer" by Keith Vincent, and it was a
personal memoir of his time at the Newmarket saleyards. It's years since I
looked at it, but I would think there would have been some sort of
historical overview of the saleyards before his own time - and there are
lots of pictures in it.

In fact, now that I think of it, the Essendon Historical Society Inc has
available for sale some photos of the saleyards, taken by Ellen Nihill,
before it closed - I forget the year, in the late 80s I should think.

If you can get hold of a copy of the Sands & Mac Directories on microfiche
for 1892- I would think they would be available in either the Turnbull
library or a genealogical library, you might be able to pinpoint the street
where the residence was.

Best wishes
