Hello Listers,
Can anyone help me with street numbers in Collins Street in 1879 and earlier.
When my great grandfather's estate was wound up in 1879, one of the properties sold was "No 8 Collins Street East". He evidently owned it as early as the mid to late 1840s and there is a thought that on it was built the second three-storey building to be erected in Melbourne. It was sold to "John Bellin". (I am afraid none of the proceeds ever reached me !).
Does anyone know what is at that location now ? I seem to recall having read somewhere that the numbers in Collins Street originally started at the opposite end ? It has even been suggested that each end of the street had it's own set of numbers, although I find that hard to believe. Any help will be much appreciated. Bryan in Bairnsdale near the beautiful Gippsland Lakes in south-east Australia.
