Hi everyone,
I am hoping that someone out there will have a connection with the following family. If so, I would love to hear from you - please contact me.
I am also hoping that there may some kind and knowledgable people who could steer me in the right direction to find out some more info about the lives in Melbourne of my ggggreat grandparents.
Patrick was tried at Newington, Surrey on 7 June 1830 at the age of 23 or 24 for selling counterfeit coins. His name was given as Patrick QUIN but it was stated that he preferred the name Patrick GRADY. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. At the same trial was James ELLIS, brass founder, age 20. Both were transported to Van Diemens Land on the ship 'Clyde'.
Patrick had PG tattoed on his hand and was known as Patrick GRADY.
About 1842, at age 20 Mary O"DOWD came to Melbourne as a 'bounty immigrant' with her brother. They were Protestants and neither could read or write. I have not found the records and do not know her brother's name, but I believe they were from the county of Mayo in Ireland. Any suggestion for tracking these down?
Mary lived in a slab hut for a while and then built a log cottage. She married Patrick in Melbourne in 1847. After having six children she left him and went with Gerry OWEN to Kerrie, in the Shire of Romsey. She didn't marry him until 1878 after Patrick had died, at the Benevolent Asylum in Hotham. Does anyone have any info about this place?
Gerry OWEN was also known as William George HORNE and was also a convict. He died in 1895. Mary was known as 'Granny Owen'.
Children of Patrick and Mary included: Martin (known as O'GRADY), David and Andrew. There were also 3 others but i don't think they married.
Does anyone have a connection to these people?
Any suggestions for further research about their life in Melbourne?
TIA and Kind regards,
Sharon
