Hi Kess,
There are two main genie sources for information about burials at the
Melbourne General Cemetery
1) the microfilm index of burials which is available at many large genie
libraries or State Libraries (this is a very large set of microfiche, so is
not the sort of thing people have at home for lookups).
2) the CD-ROM index of monumental transcriptions, which some people do hav
available for lookups, but of course doesn't include anyone without a stone
on their grave (this includes a large number of people..)
The microfilm index of burials does not include absolutely every burial -
there is the book, mentioned elsewhere on the mailing list, help at the
Gatehouse which lists the pauper burials.
The Necropolis in Springvale is responsible for the Melbourne General
Cemetery. In the old days you could write to them with some death dates and
they would send the information about grave location, who else was buried in
the grave, and a plan of the cemetery so you could locate the grave. I
haven't tried it myself, but they may reply to email enquiries of this type
- someone else on the list may have the answer to this - but you should
ensure you give them the death date.
Someone else may also know if there is a plan of the Melbourne General on
the net, so that one could print off a copy - I've never looked myself.
This would be a good option if you can't call in during working hours.
(Parking is not too good at these times!)
Best wishes,
