Hi Carmel

After researching my own family for quite a few years, I have found that
unless it was a "legal" adoption that no formal records were kept, but it
did depend upon the institution of where the children were left.

My own grandmother had 6 children she 'gave' 2 away to family members who
grew up believing that their parents were real, (which happened frequently
in the 1940's) - 3 were given-left to a womans shelter in Broadmeadows who
were eventually fostered out and only one was legally adopted out at birth.

I guess I was lucky as the shelter in Broadmeadows does/did have records as
my auntie found out all her details which found me! I think it now belongs
to Penola Catholic Secondary College in Broadmeadows Victoria.
