Hi Listers,
GERMANY for many years has re-used burial plots.
The headstones are given back to family members except those of people who
where noted people in the town, Mayors, etc. Their headstones are usually
found in local churchyards.
Although AUSTRALIA still has a lot of land, no doubt our time will come when
the same thing happens, of course it already has happened with the building
of Central Railway in SYDNEY and the MELBOURNE market.
Now is the time for us gene bugs to take photos of our ancestors graves and
note on the photos where the grave was located etc. so that the work we hand
down to future generations has as much detail as is possible.
Obviously the idea of ensuring that those buried in the early days were
interred elsewhere if they had living rellies is not accurate.
I have an ancestor who had a very large family and was buried at the
MELBOURNE Market site and he was not interred elsewhere but his grave
apparently left untouched, sadly a piece of my family history gone forever.
Regards,
Dorne.
