Yes the surname PUNSHON has many variations - not just with uneducated
people of the past - you should see the variations that we get today.
but to return to the original family back in Co Durham England, the
common variations are PUNSHON, PUNCHON, PUNSHEON, PUNCHEON, PUNSHEN.
Then there is the replacement of the first vowel by e, a and o. Others
are found in census records, and often due to poor handwriting I have
found many strange transcrptions - such as the PUNSHAW given in the
Australian record mentioned..
In my search for Sarah I have searched using her first name and
birthplace as well as PUN* so far with no luck

By the way my own family tree contains a STOREY from Whickham, Co Durham
