Ian,
While checking the archive of AUS-MILITARY-L, I came across your posting of September 2000 which said you are writing a history of the Military Era 1821-1832 in Port Macquarie. This immediately sparked my interest as I am a PhD student at the Australian National University,Canberra whose topic is the Peninsular War veterans who settled in Australia and, of course, there were some who were in Port Maquarie. Apparently, the three regiments who served there from 1821 to 1823 were the 48th, the 3rd and the 39th. In these regiments I have the following officers on my data base from the 48th: Francis Allman, William Wilson, Terence Murray, Thomas Blomfield, James Morisset, Thomas Bell, Gilbert Cimitiere, James Erskine, Edward Close and James Mitchell. From the 3rd I have William Stewart and Archibald Innes and from the 39th Collett Barker, Charles Sturt, George D'Arcy and John Fitzgerald. All the men mentioned are officers, but I am also interested in other ranks.
My object with this message is to make an initial contact with you and hope that we may be able to exchange information. I have more information on some men than others, but I am happy to share it, if it is of any value to you in your project. Or perhaps it has already been completed? In which case I would like to purchase a copy. I look foward to your reply.
