Re the list I sent of ministers of the Church of England at Gosford up to
1940, some people might be puzzled, since I stated that it came from the
Centenary booklet of 1939. I have added to the names over the years. Sorry
I forgot to mention that.
If anyone has questions to ask in relation to that list, I will delve into
my files to see if there are any bits of information which could be of help.
Please don't hold your breath, though!
The old stone Christ Church building which still stands on the right hand
side of the modern version in southern Mann Street, Gosford, was actually
moved stone by stone in drays from near the corner of George and Webb
Streets East Gosford in the first years of last century. It had been
designed by Emund Blacket and was consecrated in 1858 during Reverend Alfred
Glennie's stint at Gosford. A church had been started in the area earlier,
but the walls were not far up when the project was abandoned.
When the old church, which had fallen into disuse in the late 1800s and
was badly neglected, was moved to Gosford it was rebuilt with some change to
the height of the walls I think. This meant that it was no longer a
legitimate design by Blacket, and as far as I know this buildikng is never
listed as one these days.
Reverend Glennie in his Journals mentioned that Blacket had come up to
Gosford by ship and was satisfied with the work being done on the church (I
have not gone back to the Journals to get the exact wording on that).
Regards, Gwen
