Judy,

My great-grandmother Isabella ROBLEY (1844 - 1944) (maiden surname RAMSDEN)
was a midwife on the central coast in the 19th century. She and her husband
John ROBLEY (1843 - 1931) lived in Ourimbah and then Wyong from about 1865
onwards. Isabella often rode on horseback to attend births in the district.
Somewhere (in one of the Stinson books?) there is a little anecdote about
this. Sorry, but I can't lay my hands on this right now.

If anyone comes across her name on a birth certificate as a witness, I'd
love to hear from them.

Subject: [ANCC] midwives

Last weekend I heard a talk from someone in Newcastle who is researching
midwives and places where women gave birth before say late 1940s. In
Newcastle and Hunter area- not down this far.

Similar sorts of stories that happened on our area.

I told her I'd see if I could find out names of women who helped women give
birth- particularly in the 1800s. The only name I found on my local
certificates was a Rachel Coulter. I had a feeling there was a Mrs Pateman
and she was very interested in that name.

So those of you who have certificates of people born on the Central Coast-
Brisbane Water, I'd love you to look and tell me the name of the midwife if
she gets a mention- might well be the witness- sometimes also called an
accoucheur.
