Last year whilst over east on holidays, I managed to spend 1 day at the
National Library in Canberra & another in the State Library in Sydney
(anymore and my husband would have screamed!!!) I spent this time looking at
the Maitland Mercury which we cant access here in WA... I found out quite a
bit from obits etc, and now wonder if somebody could help me with a few
questions...

My great great grandfather was John Frederick Butler, he came out to
Australia in 1857 at the age of 11 with his parents Arthur & Elizabeth on
the "Monica". He married a Morpeth girl Charlotte Butler in 1869. His obit
says that he "conducted a fancy goods and hairdressing business" and was the
agent for the "Mercury" in Morpeth. After this he became council clerk for
26 years, retiring with ill health.. calculating from the obit it was approx
1884 -1910. I guess this was of Morpeth council not Maitland???

How can I find out more about his council involvement????

The obit (Mercury Feb 11 1922 Page 4) says that he met with an accident at
the end of the previous November (ie 1921) and was hit by a sulky. I didnt
have time to look this up last year, could anyone have a quick look at that
time in the Mercury for me, as I expect it would have made the papers.

Another time I will put up an more information about JF and Charlotte. She
burnt to death in 1921, and the paper makes very interesting reading..

I would love to hear from any other Butler & Weaver descendants
