Dear List,
I am looking for a cluster of records for the McFadyens of Maitland, of events which occurred prior to compulsory registration (which commenced in 1856) and which do not appear on the Registrar General's NSW BDM index. I do have approximate dates, which are derived from subsequent recorded death, obituary etc.,for most of these events.
The McFadyens' BDM records prior to 1856 should have been in Church registers, but distance from churches/distrust of authority/lack of participation in
organised religious services may have meant that the McFadyens never ended up in the Church registers!
Or, another possibility- do listers know if many local churches mistrusted the C of E and did not comply with the pre 1856 requirement of lodging copies of their records with the C of E Bishop in Sydney ( records which were acquired by the Registry in 1879 when the "Clergy Returns Transfer Act" was passed.)
Any advice? Where could the missing info be located locally? Details of the McFadyens now follow which interestingly include a birth date for Angus which I found in the Manning Wollamba Pioneer Register.... I'm trying to find out where they got it from!
