Hi Albert,
I have pursued a casual interest in my German ancestry (Sleishman/Isinger)
who came to the Hunter Valley from Kaferthal (Mannheim) 1856 to work as
"vindressers". I dont know how long they worked in farms, but they
eventually located farming on Ash Island (Hunter River) and Mayfield,
Newcastle where they name is well known. During the first world war the
family members had to register as aliens even though they were lst and 2nd
generation born Australians. It seems it was only the good graces of the
local police sergeant who had a long and close friendship with the family
that they were not interned for the duration, but they had to report to the
police station regularly. It is a branch of my family I am yet to pursue in
depth, but I have a copy to a 1986 publication of a "Journal of the Hunter
Valley History" which includes and article based on a talk first given at
Maitland and District Historical Society in July 1985, entitled "German
Immigration to the Hunter Valley in the Mid 19th Century". You may be
interested in the article and the bibliography. Suggest you contact
Maitland and Distsrict Historical Society and/or the publishers (propr.
Elizabeth Guilford, Hunter Valley Publications, 239 Maitland Road, Mayfield
2304 (as at 1986). Let me know if I can check anything out for you.
Regards
AG
