Dear Kathy
I have replied to you in detail off-list, but it looks like you have
yourself a convict ancestor - welcome to the club!

> Now deceased members of the Dempsey family said that the family were free
settlers but I havae not been able to find any record of Richard Dempsey who
was a miner coming out from Ireland in the assisted passage shipping records
1835 - 1851. He was here in 1850 as he married Mary Pilley at West
Maitland. Does anyone know if the Irish free settlers came out before 1835
and if there are records of these people. The only other Richard Dempsey I
can find was a convict who came out on the "King William" in 1840 aged 21. I
wonder was this him and the shame of a convict heritage has be covered up or
did he come out as a miner to the Newcastle area. Can anyone give me any
suggestions for research. Thanks Kathy
