hi Val,
The thing to remember when working with GEDCOM files is that you're not
simply saving or opening them - you're importing or exporting them, and to
your software that makes a difference. So you must always *export* to a
GEDCOM file and *import* from one, not just *open* it.
GEDCOM is the facility that allows data export from one genealogy programme
to another, and it is a process that has to be gone through on each end,
because obviously each programme stores the data in different fields &
formats and in different orders and in different ways. You will find that
in any GEDCOM import, some of the data from the file is lost or not
imported, because the importing programme handles things differently from
the exporting programme. Some programmes will offer to give you a report of
data it lost during import.
In any genealogy programme, you will find the GEDCOPM import/export
facility under the FILE menu. You follow the prompts from there, and will
end up with a file with a .ged extension, which is what you send to
(receive from) people.
In Brothers Keeper, it is FILE/GEDCOM/IMPORT[EXPORT]
In Legacy 3 it is FILE/IMPORT FROM [EXPORT TO]/GEDCOM FILE
In Ancestry Family Tree it is FILE/IMPORT [EXPORT]
I can't remember about PAF, but I'm sure it is as easy to find as it is in
those I've quoted.
Good luck
