Much, much worse...

Here in Australia, the census data was routinely DESTROYED after processing! :(

Things changed a little in 2001 when households could optionally elect to have their data preserved. For the full story have a look at: http://www.aigs.org.au/savingcensus.htm

All of us who have benefitted from the UK censuses know what an invaluable resource they are for family historians... what a crime!
