Christ Church, Mt Vincent (near Cessnock /Kurri Kurri) is having a
history day on the 24th April from 9 til 3. This beautiful stone church
was opened in 1911 as a replacement for the earlier timber structures.
The first church opened in 1849 and before that services were held in
the home of William Knox Child. The early parishioners were called to
worship by the bell on his verandah that also controlled the convicts'
working day on his estate.
Events on the day include:
.Displays of memorabilia of the Church including historical
photos of the building of the church and its predecessors.
.School photos from the district schools (Richmond Vale,
Mulbring, Brunkerville & Quorrobolong).
.Photos of pioneers & other families
.Family History information on local families from Mulbring &
Quorrobolong valleys and Awaba /Freeman's Waterhole
.Church Fete including sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas etc
.Local historical & Family History societies will also be there.
We are anticipating the Coalfields Heritage Group, Cessnock FHS, Lake
Macquarie FHS and Maitland Family History Circle will be present.
Some families with long associations with the church include:
Andrews, Armstrong, Bridge, Bromage, Buckton, Capper, Child, Clayden,
Foster, Fullick, Heaton, Hector, Hitchcock, Laybutt, Latter, Leonard,
Leggett, McDonald, Monnox, Murrell, Osland, Puddy, Rayfield, Short,
Underwood, Wellard & Wyndham.
Other district families are of course welcome!!!
The Church is also having a special service on Sunday 25th from 8 to 9
followed by tea, coffee & raisin toast.
